Xi 'an Jiaotong University, referred to as "Xi 'an Jiaotong University", is located in Xi 'an, the capital of Shaanxi Province. It is a comprehensive research-oriented national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and directly administered by the central government.

Co-founded by the Ministry of Education and the National Defense Science, Technology and Industry Bureau, it ranks among the first-class universities in the world, the first batch of key universities in the "Seventh Five-Year Plan" and "Eighth Five-Year Plan", the first batch of key universities in the 211 Project and the 985 Project, the universities sponsored by the New Silk Road University Alliance, the chairman unit of the China Artificial Intelligence Education Association, the independent audit unit of degree authorization, and one of the three universities offering juvenile classes in China.

The school is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China. It was founded in Nanyang Public College in Shanghai in 1896, and was renamed Jiaotong University in 1921. In 1956, the State Council decided to move Jiaotong University to Xi 'an as the Xi 'an part of Jiaotong University, and in 1959 it was named Xi 'an Jiaotong University. It merged with Xi 'an Medical University and Shaanxi University of Finance and Economics in 2000. In 2017, the total number of national science and technology awards won by schools ranked second in China, and in 2018, the total number of national teaching achievement awards ranked first in China.
